Watershed Quiz Answer to Question 1

<< Front Page
The correct, but sad answer is D. Less than ten acres (0.0156 square miles) of old growth forest now exist in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. When John Smith first sailed in the Chesapeake Bay nearly 400 years ago, forests were nearly 40% taller than they are today. Back then, the average hardwood tree was over 100 feet tall. Lumber was one of the first exports from the colonies, and the Bay watershed was massively cleared for agriculture, fence posts, charcoal and even railroad ties.
