Arizona Wildfires

This image of wildfires burning in southern Arizona was taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA's Aqua satellite on June 19, 2003 at 21:05 UTC (5:05 PM EDT, 2:05 PM MST).

The red areas indicate thermal detections of very hot areas that were made by MODIS and show the fire locations.

• The Larger of the two fires, known as the Aspen Fire, grew on Thursday from 460 acres to nearly 4,000 acres over a period of several hours
  
  
• The fire has already destroyed an estimated half of the homes and businesses in the tiny resort town of Summerhaven, on the summit of Mt. Lemon just northeast of Tucson
  
  
• The smaller Helens Fire has burned some 30 acres in the Rincon Mountains east of Tucson after being set by lightning Tuesday Afternoon
  
  
• At the time this image was taken, winds at Tucson were from the south at 22 mph, gusting to 35 mph
  
  
• The National Weather Service office in Tucson has issued a wind advisory until 8:00 PM MST tonight
  
  
• Dry weather and gusty winds are expected for the area through next week, hampering any chance of storm development
