NASA's Aqua Satellite Captures Arizona Wildfire

This image of the large Aspen wildfire burning in southern Arizona was taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA's Aqua satellite on June 22, 2003 at 20:00 UTC (4:00 PM EDT, 1:00 PM MST).

The red areas indicate thermal detections of very hot areas that were made by MODIS and show the fire locations.

• The fire, which began last week, has already burned more than 12,400 acres destroyed more than 250 homes on Mount Lemmon, about 15 miles north of Tucson.  Many of the destroyed homes were in the small resort community of Summerhaven.
  
  
• The fire is only about 5 percent contained as of Monday afternoon.
  
  
• Prevailing winds around the time this image was taken, were from the southwest and gusting as high as 22 mph at Tucson International Airport.
  
  
• The National Weather Service office in Tucson is forecasting breezy conditions and low relative humidity through the middle of the week.
