NASA's Terra Satellite Captures Wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico

These image of the wildfires burning in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico were taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA's Terra satellite on June 24, 2003 at 18:15 UTC (2:15 PM EDT, 11:15 AM MST).

The red areas indicate thermal detections of very hot areas that were made by MODIS and show the fire locations.

Arizona Fires

The large Aspen fire, which began last week, which has destroyed more than 345 homes on Mount Lemmon, about 15 miles north of Tucson. has already burned more than 20,000 acres.
The Aspen fire was now about 25 percent contained as of Tuesday afternoon.
The Helens 2 fire, east of Tucson, was started on Tuesday, June 17 by lightning and is now 35 percent contained.
Although winds at the time this image was taken yesterday were gusting to over 20 mph at Tucson, The National Weather Service is expecting winds to diminish significantly beginning today and for more humid conditions to return to the are by the end of the week.

New Mexico Fires

At the same time the fires were raging near Tucson, several fires were burning in neighboring New Mexico, including the fires shown here.
These fires are burning in the Gila National Forest just west of the city of Truth or Consequences.
