Evolution of the Aspen Wildfire in Arizona

Evolution of the Aspen Wildfire in Arizona

These images taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA's Terra satellite show the area around Tucson, Ariz. before and after the large Aspen wildfire started last week on top of Mount Lemmon, about 17 miles northeast of Tucson.

The red areas indicate thermal detections of very hot areas that were made by MODIS and show the fire locations.

The animation above shows how you can use the images to the right in your weathercast to show the evolution of this fire.  Save each of the still images at the appropriate resolution for your system (either 720x486 or 640x480) and dissolve from one to another in sequence to achieve the above effect.

  • To date, the Aspen fire has burned some 32,700 acres and destroyed at least 322 structures.
  • As of Friday morning, the fire was 50 percent contained.
  • At its peak, smoke from this fire could be seen over 120 miles downwind.
