Aqua Image of the Davis Wildfire in Oregon |
|
The image on the right taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA's Aqua satellite on June 30, 2003 at
20:50 UTC (1:50 PM PDT, 4:50 PM EDT) shows the Davis fire burning 12 miles west
of La Pine, Oregon.
- The fire has burned over 14,000 acres so far and is about 40 percent
contained.
- Although the cause of the fire is under investigation, one of the driest
Junes on record and strong winds created conditions favorable for its
development.
- The smoke plume from this fire extended as far away as Montana, some 450
miles to the northeast.
- The western states are experiencing hotter and drier weather, which
increased the number of fires reported yesterday by 30 percent.
- The fire started on Sunday, June 29, a day when record high temperatures of
100 or higher occurred at several Oregon locations.
