NASA's Aqua Satellite Captures Wildfire in Oregon

Aqua Image of the Davis Wildfire  in Oregon

The image on the right taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA's Aqua satellite on June 30, 2003 at 20:50 UTC (1:50 PM PDT, 4:50 PM EDT) shows the Davis fire burning 12 miles west of La Pine, Oregon.

  • The fire has burned over 14,000 acres so far and is about 40 percent contained.

  • Although the cause of the fire is under investigation, one of the driest Junes on record and strong winds created conditions favorable for its development.

  • The smoke plume from this fire extended as far away as Montana, some 450 miles to the northeast.

  • The western states are experiencing hotter and drier weather, which increased the number of fires reported yesterday by 30 percent.

  • The fire started on Sunday, June 29, a day when record high temperatures of 100 or higher occurred at several Oregon locations.
