These images show a large wildfire burning In northeast Alaska near the border with Canada, as captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the NASA's Aqua satellite on July 1, 2003.
The red areas indicate thermal detections of very hot areas that were made by MODIS and show the fire locations.
- The fire is burning in a remote area about 250 miles north of Fairbanks.
- The fire has burned some 12,000 acres so far.
- The fire was started by lightning on June 29.
- The fire is not being monitored.
