This Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) image from July 12, 2003, shows the area scorched by the Aspen Fire, northeast of Tucson, Arizona.
- The burned area appears almost black in this false-color image, partially hidden in places by purplish smoke and clouds.
- The regularly-lined streets of Tucson are easily seen in the bottom left of the image.
- The remaining vegetation on Mt. Lemmon, where the fire was burning, is colored bright green.
Environmental Impacts
- Increased humidity and rain showers at higher elevations as well as favorable wind conditions around the time this image was taken aided in the successful containment of the fire.
- The estimated cost of the fire, which started on June 17, is $17,000,000.
- The fire burned a total of 84,750 acres and destroyed an estimated 350 homes and cabins.
