Wildfires in Oregon Update #2


Background

 

Images

The images to the right were taken by the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA's Aqua satellite. They show the B&B wildfire complex in northwest Oregon on August 27, 2003. The fires are artificially marked with yellow in these images.

The northern most fire is the Bear Butte Fire & the southern fire is the Booth Fire.

The images from August 27 are repeated below, along with images from August 20, 21 and 24.  Note the shift in wind direction between August 20 and 21, as indicated by the drift of the smoke plumes.

The animation above shows how you can use the images below in your weathercast to show the evolution of this fire.  Save each of the still images at the appropriate resolution for your system (either 720x486 or 640x480) and dissolve from one to another in sequence to achieve the above effect.

Environmental Impacts:

  • The B&B Complex is located 14 miles west of Sisters, OR. This complex is comprised of the Booth and Bear Butte fires. 

  • This fire complex has burned over 40,000 acres and was 30% contained as of 9:00 PM EDT on Wednesday, August 27, 2003.

  • The fires are burning in an area of timber with heavy ground fuels.

  • The community of Camp Sherman remains evacuated and Black Butte Ranch is on evacuation alert. So far, 13 structures have been lost to this fire complex.

  • State Highway 20 remains closed for through traffic.
