The images on the right column were taken by the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA's Terra satellite. They show wildfires in Grand Canyon National Park on September 28, 2003.

Grand Canyon National Park Area:

Environmental Impacts:

  • On the northern rim of the Grand Canyon, the Poplar Complex Fire had grown to 7,660 acres as of October 1, 2003, and it is only 5 percent contained.

  • Lightning started the fire on September 4. There was little growth and minimal fire behavior due to light rain on the complex from yesterday.

  • This fire is in timber with heavy dead and downed fuels on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and fire managers have been allowing the fire to burn to achieve natural resource objectives.
