Flooding in Southern Texas

Background

Images

The false-color images were taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA's Terra satellite. They show flooding along the Nueces River south of San Antonio in Southern Texas on October 15, 2003.

This animation shows the water bodies changes along the Nueces River

south of San Antonio in Southern Texas.

Note: The animation above shows how you can use the images to your right in your weathercast to show the changes of water bodies.  Save each of the still images to your right at the appropriate resolution for your system (either 720x486 or 640x480) and dissolve from one to another in sequence to achieve the above effect.

Environmental Impacts:

  • Six to ten inches of rain fell in the region over the weekend, pushing the Nueces and Rio Grande rivers over their banks and forcing residents to evacuate.

  • In the false-color image taken before the storm (on August 2, 2003), the Nueces River and its tributaries are barely visible. In the image after the storm (on October 15, 2003), standing water is dark blue and vegetation is bright green.

  • According to Flood Statement from National Weather Service, as of 5 pm October 21, moderate lowland flooding is occurring in the Tilden area (on the west of the Choke Canyon reservoir in the image). The river will continue a slow fall, but will remain above flood stage for the next several days.

  • USGS Water Resource's observation of flow in Nueces River near Tilden, TX (on the west of the Choke Canyon reservoir in top-right of the image)

Daily mean flow statistics for 10/22 based on 59 years of record in ft3/sec
