Louisiana Superdome

The high-resolution images in this Envirocast® Bulletin were from GeoEye's IKONOS satellite. They show the Louisiana Superdome before and after Katrina, and during rebuilding.

The reopening of the Superdome for Monday night’s NFL game between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons is being touted as a symbol of the Big Easy's rise from ruin. The reopening comes just one year after Katrina struck New Orleans in late August 2005.

The above NOAA aerial photo, taken on August 31, 2005, two days after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, shows the extensive damage Katrina caused to the Superdome sports arena. Seventy percent of the roof was damaged. The Superdome was surrounded by flood waters and oil spills are visible in the parking lot, in top-left corner of this image. 3.8 million gallons of water has to be pumped out of the Superdome and its garages.
