Louisiana Superdome
The high-resolution images
in this Envirocast®
Bulletin were from GeoEye's IKONOS satellite. They
show the Louisiana Superdome before and after Katrina,
and during rebuilding.
The reopening of the
Superdome for Monday night’s NFL game between the New
Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons is being touted as
a symbol of the Big Easy's rise from ruin. The
reopening comes just one year after Katrina struck New
Orleans in late August 2005.

still frames available to your right. It shows the
Louisiana Superdome before and
after Katrina, and during rebuilding.
The above NOAA aerial photo,
taken on August 31, 2005, two days after Hurricane
Katrina struck New Orleans, shows the extensive damage
Katrina caused to the Superdome sports arena. Seventy
percent of the roof was damaged. The Superdome was
surrounded by flood waters and oil spills are visible in
the parking lot, in top-left corner of this image. 3.8
million gallons of water has to be pumped out of the
Superdome and its garages.

Some 30,000 hurricane refugees
were sheltered at the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina.
By the time they left almost a week later, 70 percent of
the roof had failed and 3.8 million gallons of water had
to be pumped out of the Dome and its garages.
About 185 million dollars in
repairs and improvements have been made to the Superdome
after it suffered damaged while being used as a shelter
during Hurricane Katrina.
It will be the first game for
the Saints in the Superdome since Aug. 26, 2005, when they
played the Baltimore Ravens in the preseason.
Nearly 70,000 people are
expected to attend Monday night’s game.
