Snow Storm Hits the U.S. East Coast
The images in this Envirocast®
Bulletin were taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)
onboard NASA's
Terra
satellite on March 18th, 2007. They show the
U.S. East Coast after the recent snow storm on March 16th and
17th.
Snow Storm Hits the U.S. East Coast
This image, acquired by the MODIS on
the Terra satellite on March 18, 2007, shows the snow storm that
hit the East Coast of the United States. The snow/sleet line is
very clearly delineated and runs through central NJ, northern
Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.
Environmental Impacts:
On Friday, March 16 a large storm system dumped rain,
sleet, and snow on the Northeast part of the nation.
Eight inches of snow fell at Frostburg, Maryland, with
5 in New York City, and up to 2 feet of snow fell in
New York's northern Catskills.
Friday's weather caused the cancellation of more than
1,400 flights and was being blamed for at least 10 traffic
deaths, six in New Jersey, three in Pennsylvania, and 1
in Maryland. Hundreds of other non-fatal crashes are
being blamed on the icy roads.
