Envirocast®
On-Line Feature of the Week -- August 23, 2007
Flooding in Ohio
The images in this Envirocast® On-Line
were captured by the Moderate Resolution
Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)
onboard NASA's
Aqua
satellite on August 13, 2007 and onboard
NASA's Terra satellite on August 22, 2007. They
show the flooding in Ohio on the Blanchard River and in the
city of Findlay.
Floods in Ohio
On August 22, the Moderate
Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)
on NASA’s Terra satellite captured the image of the flood-swollen
Blanchard River in Ohio which flows through the city of Findlay.
The city is enduring its worst flood in nearly 100 years.
In false-color images, made
with a combination of infrared and visible light, water is dark
blue or black. The
land around the water is covered in bright green vegetation spotted
with silvery-gray cities. Bare or sparsely vegetated land is tan,
and clouds are white and pale blue.
Environmental Impacts:
As of 7:00am ET, flood watches and warnings were in effect
in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota,
Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
The Ohio government has declared a state of emergency in 9
counties.
The Blanchard River reached 6 feet above flood stage
in the city of Findlay, and the city is enduring its
worst flooding since 1913.
Including deaths from a separate storm system in Oklahoma
and Texas, 26 people have died in recent flooding in the
United States, according to an Associated Press count.
Supplementary Material:
NASA's TERRA Satellite:
The Terra spacecraft (formally known as
EOS-AM) was successfully launched on Saturday, December
19, 1999 at the Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) in
Lompoc, California. It is flying at an altitude of 705 km
(438 miles) observing the Earth. The life expectancy of
the Terra mission is 6 years. It will be followed in later
years by other EOS spacecraft that take advantage of new
developments in remote sensing technologies.
NASA's AQUA Satellite:
Aqua, Latin for water, is a NASA Earth
Science satellite mission collecting about the Earth's
water cycle, including evaporation from the oceans,
water vapor in the atmosphere, clouds, precipitation,
soil moisture, sea ice, land ice, and snow cover on the
land and ice. The Aqua spacecraft (formally known as
EOS-PM) was successfully launched on May 4, 2002 at the
Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) in Lompoc, California.
It is flying at an altitude of 705 km (438 miles)
observing the Earth, and the life expectancy is 6 years.
