Gulfport, IL Flooding

This IKONOS image captured on June 20, 2008 shows the complete flooding of Gulfport, Illinois two days after the levees broke on June 18, 2008.  Only rooftops and the raised section of U.S. Highway 34 are visible above the flood waters.

Environmental Impacts:

  • The levee breaking forced 400 people to evacuate the area and left the city of Gulfport, Illinois under 10 feet of water.

  • U.S. Highway 34 crosses the Mississippi River at Gulfport to the larger city of Burlington, Iowa on the opposite side of the river.  The levees held in Burlington sparing it from the same fate as Gulfport.  (Envirocast® Bulletin June 18, 2008 - Flooding on the Mississippi)

  • According to the Associated Press, the White House asked Congress for $1.8 billion in emergency aid for the flooded region on June 18, 2008.

  • At least 7 people have died from the flooding, 5 in Iowa and 2 in Wisconsin.
